Fredericks left devastated by Nullabor's death
Equestrian: Little Cheverell based Australian international Clayton Fredericks has been left totally devastated by the death of his superb four star horse Nullabor.
The pair had been competing at the Saumur International 3 day event in France, with an eye to impressing Australian Olympic team selectors. They had begun in the best possible fashion, leading after dressage, but tragedy was to strike on the cross country course.
Inexplicably Nullabor stumbled and slipped on the flat between fences two and three on the course and died of a suspected broken neck, although an autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause.
The loss of such a true equine star, fifth and sixth at the four star Luhmuhlen and Burghley 3 day events in 2007, is a huge blow for Clayton and his wife Lucinda, who admitted they were "heartbroken at losing such a joyful horse who made our dreams possible".
The husband and wife team had happier news earlier in the month when the surrogate foal of Lucinda's Badminton and Burghley winner Headley Britannia was born.
"Both Headley Britannia and the foal's sire, Jaguar Mail, the world renowned French show jumping stallion and winner of the Sire of the World 2007, are listed to compete in their respective disciplines at the 2008 Beijing Olympics," said Lucinda.
"That makes this one pretty special foal."
