Swindon Town boss Maurice Malpas is set to step up his pursuit of Josh Low after all but conceding defeat in his bid to bring Manchester United's Ritchie Jones to the County Ground.
Low, who is on the transfer list at Peterborough United, is keen for a move and could be acquired on a free transfer.
Malpas has turned to the 29-year-old right-winger after growing frustrated in his efforts to sign Jones, 21.
Malpas said: "We're talking to Josh and trying to get something sorted out that suits both parties.
"He's after a permanent deal but we want to take a look at him first. I've tried to bring him in on loan for a few months.
"He has got a presence about him, he's quick and he gives us a different option.
"Because he's still under contract at Peterborough he's already started pre-season training which makes things a little more difficult."
Malpas told the Gazette last night that time was running out for Jones with rumours circulating he is set to sign for Herts.
Malpas said: "If I don't hear from him tonight I'll have to wash my hands of it.
"I have to start deciding who is going on the pre season tour and I need players desperate to come.
"He's been difficult to get in touch with, his agent said they'd get in touch on Tuesday but I've not heard anything."
Malpas is also looking to finalise a deal for Wolves left-back Charlie Mulgrew and says this weekend will be crunch time.
He said: "For better or worse we should have it concluded by the weekend.
"Both clubs are talking amicably but we need to come to a decision as I have seats to book on the plane to Austria.
"All the players are fighting hard to be on the tour, it's good to train with the sun on your back and being away builds camaraderie."
