Wiltshire's chief constable makes pledge on violence
Wiltshire Chief Constable Brian Moore has pledged to go toe to toe with violent criminals in a bid to make the county the safest in the country.
Mr Moore said he was determined Wiltshire would have the lowest level of violent crime of any force in the country by the end of the year.
He said: "It is my number one priority and I am warning the violent, drunken yobs out there we are ready to take them on.
"I want people to feel safe to walk the streets of our towns. Wiltshire is already a safe county but I want it to be even safer.
"It is a challenging target to reach but I think it is achievable and I have told my officers that is what I want. I want them to have the confidence to take these louts on and let them know we won't tolerate violent behviour.
"Apart from violence on the street I also want to combat domestic violence."
As part of his iniative the chief constable is not afraid to lead from the front. Yesterday evening he took to the streets with a patrol to see the difficulties for himself."

At the end of the day it doesn't matter how tough on yobs & criminals the police are. As long as we have a justice system that is weak, in-effective and controlled by people who appear to have no grasp of the real world then for all the police force's hard work the bad guys will always walk.
I wouldn't mind betting that the people who control the systems don't live on a housing estate, don't have their cars scratched or windows smashed or have drunken trouble making neighbours and yobs causing havoc. They don't have druggies begging from them because they live in their little castles and have as little to do with us peasants as possible. After all they just rule don't they.

in a car I'll wager!
Whats the point when the courts just let them go all again?
Arrest numbers go up. convictions go down....

Strong talk from a Chief Constable! I take it he will be out on the streets with those who actually do the work, or will he behind a desk hiding behind a chain of command, expecting them to face those perpetrating these violent crimes and then blaming them if his words backfire.
Reminds me of phoning a call centre where you have the cannon fodder of staff taking the calls and the abuse, whilst the bosses hide in the background.
Is he expecting his officers to lay down their lives or suffer injury in confronting the violent idiots that he wants off the street?

He walks around, gets in the faces of yobs and makes arrests ! Just what Wiltshire needs - a strong leader who is not afraid to get his own hands dirty. His gang is bigger than their gang !!!

I'm all for him seeing things at first hand but he should be doing strategy, PR, governance and overall leadership - not making arrests. That's what he's got several hundred coppers for.
Wiltshire should have very low crime (like it did until a few years ago) - they should be able to achieve this if they finish ditching their 1950s policing approach and start fighting back with some genuine and consistent aggression against the aggressors.
Good luck police, you have my support.

I'd prefer him out on the streets with his officers rather than doing PR.
99 percent of PR is bull***t and the rest is spin.

It means supporting/promoting /committing funding to events which are designed to educate and dissuade people (young and old) from committing crime.
He is as much a politician as a copper (more so in fact) and if you think his time is best spent making arrests then I'm afraid you are quite wrong.

Having been on the receiving end of PR for the past two decades, I speak from experience.
The only information worth having is from people who are at least within spitting distance of the coalface.

It's the guy at the top who'd better be doing the thinking rather than the doing if he wants to earn his salary (and peerage if he play his cards right).
